3 Keys to Writing Your First Ebook

The eBook is an excellent way to capture leads. Many companies provide consumers with free eBooks in order to obtain their names and email information. However, writing an eBook is quite a challenge in itself. There are many things to consider, including the length – eBooks tend to be much longer pieces of content than the typical blog article that you may be used to posting. Not to mention that the eBook has to be of high quality. If it isn’t, the reputation of your company could take a pretty big hit. Nothing is going to annoy consumers more than downloading an eBook that is of poor quality and useless to them – not only have you tricked them into giving you their personal information, you have wasted their time as well. Now that the pressure of writing an eBook is established, you’re probably wondering how to get started! The following are 3 keys to writing your first eBook that should help you out:

1. Identify who your audience is

This is by far the most important aspect of the eBook. There are two main reasons why you need to understand who your brand’s target audience is:
  • Without a target audience, your content won’t have any focus. You have to be writing for someone in order to write something that is informative and substantial, after all.
  • If you aren’t writing for a specific audience, then you’re basically writing for everyone. And if you’re writing for everyone, the odds increase that no one will read it. Writing for a target audience means that there will be a better chance that they will read it.
You should know who your brand’s target audience is to begin with, or else your blog content will be ineffective as well, and if your blog content is ineffective, then not many readers will be willing to give up their personal information so that they can download your eBook.

2. Research everything

Once you know your target audience, you’ll have a better idea of what to write about. However, in order to make sure that your content is informative and unique, you’ll need to do plenty of research. This includes:
  • Reading other eBooks that are similar to the one you are about to write. This will give you an idea of what a successful eBook looks like, what the structure is like, what type of information it conveys and more.
  • Reading reviews of other eBooks. Customer opinion is obviously important. Look over reviews to see what they liked and didn’t like about certain eBooks and use those as guidelines for your own eBook.
  • Research the gaps. Find out what customers thought was missing information-wise from the eBooks they read. Fill these gaps with the information that those customers asked for in order to make your eBook more comprehensive than others that were written on the same subject matter.

3. Write it

Unbelievably, beginning the eBook may be the hardest challenge. The best way to go about it is to just begin writing. Don’t worry about editing until you have everything down on paper. Once you finish your first draft, you can go back and begin the editing process. If you try to edit while you write, you’ll never finish. Once you do finish, go over each section and make sure that they fit where they are. Re-order the sections if they don’t. One thing you absolutely have to do before you publish it is make sure that there are absolutely no spelling or grammar errors. There is nothing more unprofessional than simple spelling or grammar mistakes, and an eBook full of these can hurt your reputation.
Use these three tips in order to create a high quality eBook that will help to establish your brand as an expert within your industry.
